Madden 21: Electronic Arts Reacts To The Disaster
We are a few days past the release of Madden 21. For the last few years, the fans have voiced their dislike about the successive entries of the game. This year’s opus of the series is maybe the last straw. The game has the all-time worst user score on Metacritic with 0,2/10 the last time we checked. Electronic Arts has already taken actions.
Madden is a special game in the series. It came out during the transition period preceding the next-gen consoles release. The game will therefore launch on the current generation consoles as well as the next-gen. There lies the main problem. Sports games usually follow that trend, when they launch on two different consoles generations the developers seem to neglect the older generation versions. The current generation version of Madden seems, at least to the fans, uninspired in its execution.
We can argue that the user’s score is not always reliable, however when it is so low there is clearly something wrong. In the paper, the game looked great. In addition, there is still hope that the fans will like the next-gen version. The question is will they even try it. This week the #EndMaddenMonopoly hashtag has replaced #FixFranchiseMode on social networks. This shows the depths of the fan base disappointment. There are clips on the internet showing how full of bugs the game is and it is sometimes straight up hilarious.
The absence of competition is maybe to blame for the franchise’s current state. Anyway, Electronic Arts has already reacted and made announcements in the gridiron notes for the game. Major updates for the franchise mode will be available in November. They considered the fans feedback and will introduce some of their requests in the game in an attempt to save the day. The first new features that the update will introduce are X-Factor/Superstar Ability Customization, Player Card Career Stats UI, Dev Trait Regression Tuning and Playoff Bracket.
Those new features will affect the user experience as well as the actual gameplay. Using fans’ ideas to save the game may work, but we will have to wait a few months to see how or if those changes improve the game. On the bright side of things, it is safe to think that any improvement to the current version of the game will carry on to the next-gen when it launches. Time will tell.
